5 surface treatments for rollers provided by us

We are dealing with surface treatments on rollers since the foundationf of our company in 2011. Since then, we've accumulated a lot of experience and extended our portfolio of services. In this post, we provide you with information about surface treatments that our customers have been using for a long time. Whether you choose to use fluoroplastics, rubber, PU or mircoporous surfaces, we will always help you to find the best possible solution. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages which can be used in various industries.

1 - Fluoroplastic (teflon), heat shrinkable sleeves

Our know-how, supported by years of experience and participation on trainings in Europe and the US, is used when we apply sleeves to the rollers of our customers. In order to make full use of Teflon sleeves, the sleeves must be properly applied. This technology is sensitive to various mistakes and we are the only one in the Czech Republic that are able to handle and successfully deliver such service.

We provide and apply fluoroplastic, heat shrinkable sleeves of following types:

  • FEP sleeves
  • PFA sleeves

Difference between FEP and PFA sleeves:

  • heat resistance
  • lifetime - under higher operating temperatures
  • price

FEP sleves

We provide and apply fluorplastic, heat shrinkable sleeves of FEP type in two variants:
a) etched inside (to be fixed to the cylinder surface with adhesive)
b) non-etched
The wall thickness of sleeves is 0.5 mm (standard) or 1.5 mm (increased wall thickness). The length of the sleeves ranges from 600 mm to 11,000 mm. For a successful application, the sleeve must be min. 10% longer than the working surface of the cylinder to which it is being applied. The maximum diameter of the working surface of a cylinder to be covered with an FEP sleeve is 450 mm..

PFA sleeves

We provide and apply fluorplastic, heat shrinkable sleeves of PFA type in two variants:
a) etched inside (to be fixed to the cylinder surface with adhesive)
b) non-etched
The wall thickness of sleeves is either 0.5 mm (standard) or 1.5 mm (increased wall thickness). The length of sleeves ranges from 600 mm to 11,000 mm.For a successful application, the sleeve must be min. 10% longer than the working surface of the cylinder to which it is being applied. The maximum diameter of the working surface of a cylinder to be covered with an FEP sleeve is 450 mm.

For more information and how to use fluoroplastic (teflon) sleeves, see the separate page. Sleeves are often applied to rubber coated rollers and are typically used in printing.

2 - Fluoroplasic coatings (standard and combination)

In order to use all benefits of properties of fluoroplastics (teflon) on rollers, it is also possible to use the spray method. This is an alternative to applying teflon sleeves in cases where it is not possible nor appropriate to use the sleeve itself. The advantage of coating rollers over heat shrinkable sleeves can be a higher operating temperature of the teflon layer or the possibility of using PTFE, ETFE or E-CTFE material. Another reason for the choice of teflon coating can be the shape of the roller - the impossibility of attaching the sleeve to the cylinder. It depends on a specific requirements and possibilities of application of the fluoroplastic layer on the required roller..

More information about the use of coatings can be found on a separate page.

3 - Rubber coating:

We provide applications of new rubber surfaces, as well as grinding or complete replacements of already existing rubber surfaces of the cylinders for our customers. We provide rubber surfaces of excellent mechanical properties, high chemical resistance, heat resistance up to 200 °C, electrically conductive or insulating. Basic types of mixtures provided by us are NBR - (nitrile-butadiene rubber) and EPDM - (ethylene-propylene rubber).

4 - Microporous surfaces:

Rollers with microporous surface are mainly used in manufacturing processes where material must not come into contact with the roller. Air is driven to form a homogeneous air cushion through the high porosity of the surface to prevent the contact with the surface of the roller. These surfaces can be used even when some belts have to be rotated or deflected without contacting the roller.

5 - Polyurethane:

For rollers with polyurethane coating there is a wide range of utilization. Especially thanks to their excellent mechanical properties, they find employment in operations with high demands on the resistance of the coating to mechanical damage (abrasion, cut, traction, slash, etc.), or requirements for a precise and high-quality application of finishing agents (painting, applying stain, etc.). These can be found, for example, in mechanical engineering, woodworking and furniture industry, or in the production of wrappings. In these sectors, they mainly serve as painting-, drive-, press-, tow-, sliding-, or transport cylinders.
